Prompt 156.1
Single word: Discovery )

Character: The Seventh Doctor
Fandom: Doctor Who (and a touch of Men in Black)
Words: 1,346
Notes: *Men in Black: The Role-Playing Game released in 1997 listed the agents as carrying an item called Carte Noire, which they psychically influenced to allow the viewer to see whatever they wanted them to as identification.

*I am aware of Shell Shock, but I like this rendition of what happened better, playing off the theory that universes have convergent evolution and some events would correlate.

He was still dizzy, the psychic pressure all around him. He was losing, and he couldn't allow himself to lose. Not this time. Not at their hands, no. But Ace was out there still, somehow. She had faith he would make it through and he was too stubborn to allow these... these creatures of mischief and destruction abandon her. No, not Ace. He couldn't disappoint Ace. Not after everything they'd been through together and everything that she'd forgiven him for. She always had faith in him, even when he sometimes doubted that he deserved it. She was there, a mental anchor for him to hold onto. For him to lurch his way out of his own psychological trappings and make them both something greater. That's why he had to do this.

His joints burned with effort as he pulled himself up from the cold cobblestone beneath him... )

Humor is also a way of saying something serious. - TS Eliot

"The planet is called Newfoundland? That's an odd name for a planet..." Ace said, hands jammed into her jacket pockets as she trailed after the Professor.

"How is it odd? Of course it's not the original name of the planet. There's a few clicks and something that sounds like what happens after a badly digested bit of fish in it, but the settlers named it Newfoundland to feel at home. That's frequently what humans do, name a place for the place they once lived in to invoke a sense of belonging. Clasping onto whatever similarities remind them of what they came from all the while experiencing something new all thanks to a few choice words"

He rather liked the quaint little planet of Newfoundland.... )

"But what are we doing here?"

The chipper ring of Mel's voice followed the Doctor as he strolled along the sidewalk, gently swinging his umbrella like a cane in time with his leisurely gait. It was a little chilly in London, early as it was in the year and the damp contributed to it. He expected that it was going to rain. A thunderstorm would be nice, the air always smelled pleasantly charged after one even if the weather made his hair twist and curl up in an irritating way. But that's what hats were for, weren't they?

"Hmm?" he finally responded after a moment, forgetting she'd asked something in all of his reflection on the weather and having to go back over it in his mind to retrieve what she'd asked. ''Ah, yes. I'm here to honor an old acquaintance of mine...'' )

It was bright in the morning in Watford, 1989. Birds chirping, children rushing off for classes, the sky blue and decorated with puffy tufts of cumulus clouds just to break up the expanse of sky. The scenery was rather astoundingly lovely, as the sun lit up the fresh emerald green grass, and the Doctor had just ambled away from the TARDIS as he was wont to do, striding along and wielding his umbrella like a walking stick and generally looking very smug with himself. He listened to the domestic squalling from the suburban houses with a sense of fondness for the humans who lived there, most of their abodes with that polished gingerbread look and tidy lawns and facades that bordered on false if he hadn't seen them when they were little more than foundations.

From the one he was standing beside of, he had been noting the activities of the married couple within, presumably new to their marital bliss. The wife was chiding her husband for his tardiness. ''Half past eight and you're late!...'' )

The 'Professor' as Ace called him despite many adamant arguments to discourage her was occupied at the window of the mundane little country shack they had been staying at. Occasionally he would hop up, hold his hat on his head as if he were on the edge of bolting outside and facing some unscrupulous foe, but then he'd settle again. He'd watch and impatiently wait and maybe even brood a little. The worst part was he was distracting her, and he needed to stop if there was nothing going on because she didn't need to be looking away from the screen so often. Not when she was reaching the final levels of the game she was playing.

They were a wicked invention, these video games.... )

It was too early, that sort of early that made one's head ache at just thought of getting up, and only a steaming hot shower could truly relieve the pressure in your sinuses. That sort of early where you fought for sleep as fiercely as the last soldier on a battlefield defending his nation.

It was never too early for the Doctor to come in and shake one out of a relaxing sleep... )
